AIIC – Association des Interprètes de Conférence – was founded in 1953 and is domiciled in Geneva, Switzerland.
AIIC is the only global association of conference interpreters, and members are admitted on the basis of the fulfilment of rigorous quality criteria.
An interpreter’s languages are classified as A, B, or C. A is used for a mother tongue, B for an active language, and C for a passive language. Consequently, an interpreter will work actively into either an A or a B language, but never into a C language.
AIIC is the only body recognized to negotiate conditions of employment and work of conference interpreters with the UN agencies and the EU institutions. A total of 30 AIIC members are domiciled in Denmark, and there are 49 AIIC members in the other Nordic countries.
